KVIA’s Darren Hunt Files $450,000 Claim Against City and Police Dept.

Darren Hunt, the KVIA-News 7 reporter who was roughed up and arrested (picture, left) by an El Paso police officer while covering an accident on Interstate-10 in April, has filed a $450,000 claim against the city and the Police Department.

In the administrative claim, which may precede the filing of a lawsuit against the city in state court, Hunt is seeking $300,000 in punitive damages and $150,000 in actual damages.

Hunt could not be reached for comment, but KVIA News Director Brenda DeAnda confirmed that the station had been notified of Hunts claim and reassigned him from covering City Hall to county government as a result.

KVIA, she said, is not involved in Hunts action against the city. “Hes doing it independently from the station,” DeAnda said. “Everything we know has been reported.” More…
