Chicago Station Claims Legal Live Drone First

By Kevin Eck

Chicago ABC owned station WLS claims it made history by being the first station to (legally) use a live shot from a drone during a regularly scheduled newscast.

Reporter Paul Meincke used the drone on a story Thursday, previewing the opening of a local trail that used to be a railroad line. The drone was flown by Colin Hinkle, the first photographer in Chicago to get the FAA OK for commercial drone flights.

“It’s really exciting to be the first in this city to offer live drone shots during a newscast,” said Jennifer Graves, vp and news director. “Our commitment to cutting edge technology gave us the opportunity to offer our viewers news in the most compelling way possible.”
