By Chris Ariens

From the Arab Spring to Occupy Wall Street, TIME has deemed this the year of The Protester.

Managing editor Rick Stengel went on the “Today” show this morning to reveal his magazine’s 2011 Person of the Year.

“There was a lot of consensus among our people,” Stengel told Matt Lauer and Ann Curry. “It felt right.”

The newsmagazine editors have been selecting a person (or group, or thing) of the year for the last 84 years.

TODAY.com held a poll earlier this week for nominees which included late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and SEAL Team 6. TIME had its own poll which included Casey Anthony, Herman Cain and Kim Kardashian.
