Scott Pelley Marks Six Months As ‘CBS Evening News’ Anchor

By Merrill Knox

Tuesday marked the six-month anniversary of Scott Pelley’s debut on “CBS Evening News.” The New York TimesBrian Stelter notes a “symbolic” difference between Pelley and his predecessor, Katie Couric:

For decades, the office of the “CBS Evening News” anchor has been situated up a short staircase from the newscast’s open newsroom and anchor set. From that perch, the office has a view of newsroom, like a balcony seat at a theater.

But when Ms. Couric had the anchor job, between 2006 and 2011, visitors noticed that the wall of windows in the office had been covered up, leaving her without a view. It served as a handy metaphor for the disconnect between Ms. Couric and some of the CBS News staff.

But the view is wide open once again. Mr. Pelley recounted walking into the office for the first time when Dan Rather was the anchor of the “Evening News.” The window view was open then, too.
