Today’s a big day for CBS’s Russ Mitchell, who will serve as Homecoming Grand Marshal at the University of Missouri, his alma mater.

“It’s an incredible honor,” he tells TVNewser.  Mitchell, class of ’82, will ride in the Homecoming parade “and lead the crowd in a hearty chant of M-I-Z-Z-O-U!”

Mitchell – a Missouri native who got his first TV job as a night switchboard operator at St. Louis’ KTVI – keeps a home in the St. Louis suburbs. “Someone once told me that I seem ‘spiritually recharged’ when I come back to New York from a trip to Missouri,” he tells TVNewser. “I’m not exactly sure what that means but I think it was a good observation.”

Mitchell will be sharing his experiences today via Twitter.
