After 23 years, Dean Reynolds is changing channels (from ABC to CBS). The son of the late legendary ABC anchorman Frank Reynolds penned a goodbye note in which he wrote “journalism is an honorable calling and all of you should be proud to be a part of it.”
And in a somewhat cryptic way, left readers wondering with this passage: “It is not my intention here to explain my decision to leave, though I hope most of you with children will understand it over time…”
Any ideas?

My dear friends and colleagues,
The time has come to say my goodbyes to all of you who have meant so much to me over the years — and decades. Everything I have achieved at this network has been the result of your often anonymous and under-appreciated efforts on my behalf. I can never thank you enough, and I salute you. Journalism is an honorable calling and all of you should be proud to be a part of it.
It is not my intention here to explain my decision to leave, though I hope most of you with children will understand it over time.
And though I am departing, I will have nothing but wonderful memories to savor — yes, even all those stories about the price of a gallon of gasoline. ABC News has been very good to me and I am deeply grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way. I hope I have been worthy.
Now I move on to a new challenge, ever mindful that new challenges are few and far between for those of us in the northern reaches of our 50s.
So take care, all of you.
And if you think of me again, you would do well to heed this timeless admonition for those who lead the pack:
“Objects in your rear view mirror are closer than they appear.”
