By Alex Weprin

The first full week of 2011 is typically a slow one for the news networks, but with the tragic shooting in Tucson last weekend, it ended up being a big one, especially for Fox News Channel.

FNC finished third in primetime behind only ESPN, which broadcasts “Monday Night Football,” and TNT. FNC was even able to top USA Network, which was the top channel on all of cable last year.

Overall, FNC averaged 1.954 million total viewers in primetime, with MSNBC placing 27th with 768,000, and CNN 31st with 645,000.
