Piers Morgan Comes Up In Murdoch Testimony, Calls Hacking Claim ‘Complete Nonsense’

By Alex Weprin

CNN host Piers Morgan was brought up toward the end of the Murdoch testimony before Parliament. MP Louise Mensch brought up Morgan’s reference to phone hacking in his 2005 autobiography, and said that he used the technique to secure scoops. As it happens, the reference in question said nothing about him using the technique.

Morgan responded to Mensch’s claim on Twitter, his strongest statement yet since the claims were made last week:

“That MP just claimed I boasted in my book of using phone-hacking for a scoop. Complete nonsense. Just read the book. I’ve never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, or published any stories based on the hacking of a phone. I wrote in my book that someone warned me phones could be hacked, so I changed my pin number. That’s it.”

Update: At 1:05 Pm ET, Mensch once again cited Morgan’s autobiography, but appears to be confusing what the CNN host wrote with what was written by the UK blog Guy Fawkes.

“Ms Mensch is completely and utterly wrong. She clearly hasn’t read my book. Can someone please give her a copy?” Morgan tweeted.
