Here’s the state of the network morning shows as we enter August: “Good Morning America” is still number one, the “Today” show seems to have bottomed out, and “CBS This Morning” is growing the most.
Rise and shine. Interesting things are happening in the AM.
Compared to the same week last year “Good Morning America” grew its audience by +5%, but lost viewers in the younger demo, down -2%. “Today,” too, grew among total viewers, +6%, but lost -5% in the demo.
No. 3 “CBS This Morning” saw a whopping +25% gain in total viewers and added +8% in the crucial younger demo. The big news last week was the birth of Britain’s Prince George. But morning show viewers didn’t seem to be tuned in. CBS did the least coverage from London.
The averages for the week of July 22, 2013:
- Total Viewers: ABC: 5.100M / NBC: 4.533M / CBS: 2.815M
- A25-54 viewers: ABC: 1.806M / NBC: 1.740M / CBS: 919,000
“GMA” also wins the 2013 July sweep for the first time since 1994 in both total viewers and younger viewers. The show split the win last July, taking total viewers while “Today” claimed the demo win.
Once again, “CBS This Morning” showed the biggest growth: +19% in total viewers and +3% in the demo. “GMA” was up +9% in viewers and +4% in the demo and “Today” was up +4% in viewers and flat in the demo.
