Middle East Crisis: Deployments

By Brian

“Did it strike you as amusing that NBC’s Beirut bureau chief Richard Engel wasn’t even in Beirut for the start of the story?,” an e-mailer asks. Well, come to think of it, yes.

David Verdi says Engel was in Gaza covering another part of the story. As a result, ABC’s David Wright and FNC’s Greg Burke both had a nice head start — they flew into the city on Wednesday. Engel drove into Beirut on Thursday in time for NBC Nightly News. Other correspondent deployments:

FNC: Mike Tobin at the northern border between Israel and Lebanon, David Lee Miller in Gaza, Amy Kellogg in Jerusalem, Jennifer Griffin in Israel (via ICN)…

CNN: Anderson Cooper in Israel, Nic Robertson and Alessio Vinci in Beirut, John Vause at the northern border of Israel and Lebanon, Ben Wedeman in the Gaza Strip, Paula Hancocks in Safed, Israel, and Paula Newton in Jerusalem. Christiane Amanpour will be in Jerusalem on Sunday (via CNN P.R.)…

NBC: Fred Francis in Gaza City, Martin Fletcher in Israel; who else?…

ABC: Wilf Dinnick in Northern Israel, Dan Harris in Israel. Harris was returning from South Korea to New York; he was redirected to the Middle East…

CBS: Richard Roth along the northern border, Lara Logan in Israel, Elizabeth Palmer in Beirut…

Now the nets are positioning correspondents in Syria. CNN’s Baghdad correspondent Aneesh Raman is in Damascus, and ABC’s Nick Watt is en route…
