Kate Snow on Her ‘First Day at a New School’

Kate Snow, who departed the weekend edition of ABC’s “Good Morning America” in March, had her first official day in the NBC offices Monday. She’ll be working on the newsmagazine “Dateline NBC.” “It’s like the first day at a new school,” Snow told TVNewser. “I’m meeting a lot of new people. Trying to learn your way around the place.”

She said the decision to leave ABC was a difficult one. “I had a great job before, I loved my job at ABC,” she said. “But there comes a point in your life where you have to assess where you’re coming and going. You look for new opportunities, everybody does that.”

Beyond the role she’s assuming at “Dateline,” Snow told us there will be other possibilities to get involved at NBC. “There’s the ‘Today’ show, ‘Nightly News.’ There are all kinds of opportunities here and that was a big part of my decision to come over.”

Snow’s looking forward to working on longer-form storytelling at NBC. “I’m stretching my muscles; learning and continuing to grow as a professional,” she said, adding that reclaiming her early mornings and weekends won’t be so bad either.

Snow told TVNewser that she’s had a “long and interesting relationship with NBC.”

She said she’d spoken with NBC News numerous times over the last ten years and, there are several people she knows well from her days as a political correspondent. “When you’re on the campaigns, you’re with your colleagues at the other networks,” she said. “I’ve known Andrea Mitchell, Savannah Guthrie, and Chuck Todd for years. We’ve been trading phone calls.”

Snow, who had an opening in her contract, left ABC News just as that organization happened to be going through some major changes. “There’s a great team of people there and I have nothing but respect for ‘GMA’ and ABC as a whole,” she said.

Snow said she wasn’t around to experience the job-cutting process, but emphasized that everyone’s connected in the small TV news world. “I hope it works out, and through all the changes, they come out stronger.”

The Sunday prior to her NBC start was also a big day for Snow. She told us she’d had Mother’s Day breakfast in bed delivered by her two children (4 and 7). “It was the kind of day that makes a mom cry,” she said.
