Al Jazeera America anchor John Seigenthaler is being honored with the 2015 Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in Media. Seigenthaler, the anchor of AJAM’s prime time newscast, is the former anchor of NBC Nightly News weekend editions. He has also anchored on CNBC and MSNBC. Seigenthaler got his start in local media, at stations in his native Nashville and, later, Seattle.

The award, which will be presented Oct. 1 at the University of South Dakota, honors lifetime achievement in media. Named for the late USA Today and Freedom Forum founder Al Neuharth, the award will be presented as part of a daylong celebration at the University of South Dakota, Neuharth’s alma mater.

“John’s commitment to excellence in television news spans a period in which news and information has become available in unprecedented volume from an ever-increasing number of sources,” said Gene Policinski, chief operating officer of the Newseum Institute. “Whether the platform is local, national or international, he consistently has called for and delivered the kind of clear, accurate and solid journalism his audiences sought and deserved.”
