Later today, 60 Minutes creator and CBS News legend Don Hewitt receives an award named for another CBS News legend: Edward R. Murrow. Hewitt will receive the lifetime achievement award at Washington State University, Murrow’s alma mater (although it was called Washington State College at the time). The recognition comes just weeks before the 100th anniversary of Murrow’s birth, on April 25, 1908.
Hewitt, produced and/or directed seminal news broadcasts of Murrow’s in the 1950s. The attached image shows Hewitt and Murrow in the control room before a filming of “See it Now” on April 6, 1951. Previous winners of the Murrow achievement award include Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw.
