Fusion Opens Florida ‘Newsport’

By Chris Ariens

Florida Governor Rick Scott was among the dignitaries at the opening yesterday of the newsroom and studio for Fusion, the ABC News-Univision channel launching in two months. The Newsport, as it’s called, took over a former office and warehouse in Doral, FL, just west of Miami. It will also be the new home for Univision Network News.

TVNewser took a tour of Newsport in May, as construction was in high gear. It includes five control rooms and five studios — including large side-by-side studios: one for Fusion, the other for Univision. Fifteen robotic cameras and 950 miles of cable will transmit multiple programs, on multiple channels, 24 hours a day, if need be. There is more than 1000 Terabytes of online storage — racks, and racks and racks of storage — equivalent to 1,450 years of play time. And, being in the hurricane zone, engineers have installed two 2.25 megawatt generators.

Fusion launches October 28. Unvision’s newscasts will originate from here even sooner. Fusion anchor Derrick Ashong gives a tour:
