Cable Network Ranker: Week Of March 11

By Alex Weprin

With a lot of big TV events last week, including “The Bible” on History and some big basketball games, cable TV had a strong week in terms of viewership.

While there was plenty of news, the cable news channels ended up around where they normally do, with Fox News the only channel to crack the top 10. FNC placed fifth in primetime among ad-supported cable channels (sixth among all cable channels) and seventh in total day among ad-supported channels (eighth overall). FNC averaged 1.79 million viewers in primetime and 1.09 million viewers in total day.

MSNBC placed 22nd in primetime and 27th in total day among ad-supported channels (23rd and 28th overall), averaging 748,000 and 398,000 viewers, respectively.

Once again bolstered by the Jodi Arias trial, HLN topped sister network CNN for the week, placing 32nd in primetime and 29th in total day (33rd and 30th among all channels), averaging 550,000 and 385,000 viewers. CNN was right behind its sibling, placing 33rd and 30th among ad-supported nets (34th and 31st among all channels), averaging 526,000 and 384,000 viewers, respectively. Current TV, which will soon become Al Jazeera America, placed 93rd in primetime and 95th in total day, below Nielsen’s minimum accuracy threshold.

For the business networks: CNBC led the way, placing 53rd in primetime and 51st in total day (54th and 52nd among all channels), averaging 212,000 and 162,000 viewers, respectively. Fox Business placed 92nd in primetime and 86th in total day, averaging 46,000 and 50,000 viewers, respectively. Bloomberg TV isn’t rated by Nielsen, and hasn’t been since it launched back in 1994.
