Andy Rooney Shows Softer Side: Great-Grandfather

By Chris Ariens

In his final regular “A Few Minutes With…” segment tonight, Andy Rooney took time to write about his family.

I’ve done a lot of complaining here, but of all the things I’ve complained about, I can’t complain about my life. My wife Margie and I had four good kids…now there are grandchildren. I have two great grand children although they’re a little young for me to know how great they are. And all this time I’ve been paid to say what is on my mind on television. You don’t get any luckier in life than that.

Two of Rooney’s children, Brian and Emily followed their father into the business. Brian was a longtime correspondent for ABC News and Emily is a talk radio and TV host in Boston, and before that held producing and executive stints at Fox, ABC News and at WCVB-TV in Boston. Rooney’s grandson Justin Fishel is the Pentagon producer for Fox News. Rooney, 92, is pictured with his two great-grandchildren — Fishel’s twins — born in May of 2009.
