What’s Cooking? Avec Eric First to Allow Viewers to Shazam Recipes

By Adam Flomenbaum

Avec Eric,’ the two-time Emmy-award and James Beard award winning series returned on Saturday on the Cooking Channel. The series, hosted by Eric Ripert (of Le Bernadin fame), offers viewers an inside look into the culinary profession. In the 12-episode third season, viewers follow Ripert to Australia and Korea.

Viewers are also able to Shazam recipes featured on the show in real-time; this marks the first time that Shazam has worked with a cooking show to allow users to retrieve recipes.

During a recipe segment, an on-screen call to action will appear letting viewers know that they can Shazam what Ripert is making. Shazam will identify the recipe and will drive viewers to it on the Avec Eric site, where they will then be able to print or bookmark it for later.

There is certainly room for additional players in the listening space – Facebook released its own tool in May, and Samsung has come under heat for its TV that listens – but no has come close to truly competing with Shazam. Recipes are a fantastic extension of the app’s current TV uses, and more food channels and cooking shows will certainly be adopting this feature quickly.
