PBSDS-4ShowsPBS became the latest traditional TV network to host their first NewFront event this spring. The event in NYC was a platform for the network to announce a new slate of original digital programming. “Expanding onto digital platforms has opened up new and exciting ways for PBS and our member stations to fulfill our mission of using the power of media to educate, engage and inspire the American people,” said PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger in the announcement. “Through PBS Digital Studios, we are able to reach even more Americans with smart, original content that engages people’s curiosity about the world around them.”

New programming includes:

-“Frankenstein, M.D.,” a scripted series from Pemberley Digital, the creators of the “Lizzie Bennet Diaries” and “Emma Approved.”

-Pancake Mountain,” a reboot of the cult-favorite musical variety show that featured more than 150 popular music artists.

-Launching on PBS Digital Studios today, in partnership with Magnet Media, are “Bongo Bongo,” which explores the history of English-language words, and “Food Buzz,” offering viewers a fast, funny look at the latest news in the food blogosphere and the history, science and psychology behind a variety of food memes.

Growth of their digital studios:

Since its launch in 2012, PBS Digital Studios has grown to more than 1 million subscribers across the award-winning network. More than 30 PBS Digital Studios series, including local productions in partnership with PBS member stations, are available on YouTube, Roku, Xbox, Apple TV and PBS.org, and average more than 5 million streams each month.

It’s exciting to see PBS invest in digital especially as they prepare to sell their premium digital content to sponsors.
