NBC teams up with Facebook for the London Olympics

NBC announced today it’s collaborating with Facebook on several fronts for the upcoming London Olympic Games. In addition to a steady stream of content and polls, NBC said it would post exclusive content on Facebook that fans can unlock by liking the page. Users can participate in a daily poll plugged on air, and Facebook will work with NBC Sports to product “social media segments” to air throughout the games.

NBC will also periodically air a “Talk Meter” that will “inform viewers about stories, results, athletes and events that other fans of the Olympic Games are talking about on Facebook,” the network said.

“With the Olympic Games being one of those rare cultural moments that everyone talks about, people will watch the games on NBC and engage with their friends and favorite athletes on NBC Olympics’ Facebook page,” said Andy Mitchell, Strategic Partner Manager at Facebook.

Over on NBCOlympics.com, the site features an open graph app that enables users — who activate it — to automatically share what they watch and read on their Facebook Timeline. While the technology isn’t new, NBCOlympics.com’s unprecedented amount of live and on-demand video could make this a very interesting social integration.

“Social media is an important part of how fans consume and interact during the Olympics,” said Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with Facebook to serve fans as they watch and celebrate the London Olympic Games.”
