How ABC's early release of 'Apt. 23' is generating social buzz

By Natan Edelsburg

A new ABC comedy is about to bring James Van Der Beek (aka Dawson Leary) back to primetime, and the social TV buzz is already heating up after the network released the first two episodes on ABC.com and iTunes. “Don’t Trust the B**** in Apt. 23” is becoming the most talked about new sitcom and it doesn’t even air until next Wednesday after Modern Family. @Apt23 has over 3,000 followers, over 70,000 Facebook likes and almost 16,000 GetGlue check-ins.

The decision to release the first two episodes online is already paying off. Creek fans are already coming in herds to check out the show and the two main actresses are proving that this is a “must-Tweet” show. Trendrr TV has exclusively provided Lost Remote with insights into the trends around the buzz about “Apt. 23.”

“Beginning March 26th, activity spiked dramatically after excited fans began spreading news about the show’s release on Hulu and iTunes, declared early check-in on GetGlue, and shared links to relevant articles and video content,” Trendrr told Lost Remote. Trendrr looked at a sample set of 969 tweets from the 26th-28th:

  • Tweets about James Van Der Beek made up 14% of the conversation
  • Tweets about Krysten Ritter (the main protagonist, who plays the b****) made up 6% of the conversation
  • Tweets about Hulu made up 8% of the conversation
  • Tweets about iTunes made up 2% of the conversation
  • 1/3 of all comments were about related to ‘watching’ the program

Trendrr also added that conversation themes included, “excitement for James Van Der Beek – while playing himself on the show, his name is inevitably tied to mentions of Dawson’s Creek.” Van Der Beek, who for awhile hadn’t been seen in too many notable roles, made a few hilarious clips with Funny Or Die that caught the attention of show creator Nahnatchka Khan. Anyone who’s ever loved Dawson’s Creek or anyone who’s loved hating Dawson Creek will love this new ABC comedy that’s built in with shareable, Funny Or Die-esque moments. Trendrr pointed out that Showtime’s early release of episodes for House of Lies and Borgias also earned them positive buzz.
