Why Do You Want to Start a Blog?

agents-guide-cover.jpgThe 2010 edition of the Guide to Literary Agents is coming soon, and it features an article by GalleyCat senior editor Ron Hogan about how authors can use blogs and social media tools. But first, he explains why you should never start a blog to promote your book:

“Remember that scene in A Christmas Story when Ralphie becomes totally absorbed in the coded message from his favorite radio show only to walk away in disgust when he finds out it’s a ‘crummy commercial’? That’s how online readers feel, and they can usually sniff out the marketing a lot sooner.”

The article goes on to discuss concepts like “passionate authority“( which will be familiar to longtime GalleyCat readers), as well as tips for networking with writers and book lovers on sites like Facebook and Goodreads. The 2010 Guide to Literary Agents is scheduled to come out on September 2.
