The Poetry of Barack Obama

By Jason Boog

ObamaBarack.jpgBetween Sarah Palin’s famous mixed metaphors (“As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska”) and John McCain’s ongoing Joe the Plumber conceit, some writers cringed at the language of the Republican campaign.

Perhaps inspired by those metaphorical excesses, the Guardian crowned Barack Obama the most poetical candidate today in a ringing endorsement by poet Adam O’Riordan. Read his eloquent tribute to an eloquent candidate:

“I have a theory that some poets never make it to the page. A few get away and plough their talent into other areas of life. Obama’s well-chosen, seemingly off-the-cuff metaphors suggest he’s not just schooled in the civic art of rhetoric but also a born communicator.”

If that’s not enough, the NY Times published two 20-year-old poems by Obama back in May.
