The Editors’ Future: “More Work for Fewer People”?

By Neal

Earlier this week, we sat in on a fascinating conversation, sponsored by NYU‘s Center for Publishing, about the tension between media business models built upon paid or free content—we’ll have more to say about the panel discussion itself later on, when we’ve sorted through our notes, but there was a comment from a fellow audience member, HarperStudio chief Bob Miller, that was so intriguing to us that we made an effort to track him down during the reception afterwards and talk about it on camera.

Miller looks at several of the economic variables that may be shaping the publishing industry’s future, and raises a disheartening prospect about what they mean for staff levels among the editorial ranks: “more work for fewer people.”
