Today’s Featured Book of Color Pick of the Day is the first novel by Eugenia Kim, The Calligrapher’s Daughter (Henry Holt and Company). Set in the tumultuous days of early twentieth-century Korea during the time of Japanese occupation, the novel tells the story of Najin Han and her struggle to follow her own dreams. As the privileged daughter of a calligrapher, Najin is expected to follow her traditional father’s orders of marrying into an aristocratic family. Her usually passive mother defies her husband and sends Najin to serve in the king’s court, where Najin starts out on a journey that will ultimately change her world.

Eugenia Kim is an MFA graduate of Bennington College and lives in Washington D.C. with her husband and son. The Calligrapher’s Daughter was inspired by the life of her mother.
