Subtext Brings Social Tools To Google eBooks

By Dianna Dilworth

For readers that like to have virtual discussions around their books, there is a new iPad app called Subtext that lets readers read and discuss books within the pages of a digital book with a community of friends.

eBookNewser has more: “Readers can add links and have what the company is describing as ‘Facebook style discussions’ around the book. Authors and scholars can also participate (Think DVD audio commentary for books). The above video goes into more detail about how it works. The app is compatible with books purchased in Google’s eBookstore. Readers can open their Google eBooks in the Subtext app to contribute.”

Subtext has already partnered with various publishers including Hachette Book Group, Penguin Group and Random House and currently has 18 books that come with Subtext author notes. Titles include: A Game of Thrones, Incognito, Snow Flower and The Secret Fan.

If you want to learn more about social reading and add social features to your digital books, Mediabistro’s Publishing App Expo on December 7-8 will explore this new market–helping publishers, authors and readers use these new tools.
