Shakespeare First Folio Auctioned Off For $3.68 Million

Shakespeare True Face (GalleyCat)Christie’s Auction House has sold first four editions of William Shakespeare’s plays. The Associated Press reports that the winning buyer paid £2.5 million GBP (approximately $3.68 million USD).

According to the Christie’s website, this sale was organized to honor the 400th anniversary of the death of The Bard. Scholars estimate that Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets in his lifetime.

Here’s more from The Wall Street Journal: “750 first Folios were printed but only 233 are recorded as having survived. Published in 1623, the collected works brings together 36 of Shakespeare’s plays, of which eighteen had not previously appeared in print.”
