Scene @ Leo Lerman’s Grand Surprise Party

The publication party for The Grand Surprise, the collected journals of Leo Lerman, turned out to be way more extra-literary than my usual haunts; in fact, when I showed up at the Osborne building, I didn’t know anybody in the room at first. Fortunately, Debbie Newman of Jossip was there with a publicist friend to orient me in the crowd, and pretty soon I was getting my picture taken with Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne. Then Joel Kaye, a close friend of Lerman’s longtime companion Gray Foy, led me and a Knopf publicist into the back of the apartment for a brief tour of the bedrooms, where he pointed out some of Lerman’s more unusual collections, including a set of thin glass vases designed to hold water “from the spas” in one’s kerchief pocket. Rumor has it that Steve Martin and Patricia Neal were floating around the party, too, but I never saw them—and another publicist assured me that if I’d only arrived earlier, I would’ve met many other socialites, who dropped in at the very start of the reception before heading out to the Costume Institute gala…
