Clockwise from the top right: Hyperion Books for Children VP Brenda Bowen introduces painter children’s book illustrator Kadir Nelson to a roomful of Hyperion staffers, children’s librarians, and booksellers gathered in the imprint’s reception lounge last Friday afternoon to celebrate Nelson’s recent Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Award for his work on Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom. Framed prints of several of that book’s paintings were on display, along with hi-res printouts of the paintings Nelson has been doing for his next project—his first as both writer and illustrator—a children’s history of the Negro Leagues which Hyperion will publish later this year.
