Revisiting Our ‘I Write Like’ Obsession

I Write Like by Mémoires, journal software. Analyze your writing!

In July, the web-based “I Write Like” game obsessed the online literary and publishing set. To play, simply cut and paste a sample piece of text into the website–the program will compare the style of your prose to famous writers. More than 100,000 readers visited the literary game during one crazy day.

On a slow Friday afternoon last week, we went back to see how the site has fared since those heady days of super-traffic. The site now contains an online store, selling everything from writing handbooks to notebooks.  According to the program, this GalleyCat editor now writes like Vladimir Nabokov.

In addition, the site now points to a publisher, displaying this message underneath our results: “‘I have personally read through thousands of book proposals in my career as a publisher and agent. I know what these professionals are looking for—and what they are not looking for.’–Michael Hyatt, Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers.”
