20-year-old Hamlet guards a stack of The Open Door, the posthumous second novel by Basic Books publisher Liz Maguire, while his owner, Maguire’s college classmate Marc Baum, looks on. Baum hosted a party for the novel, which was recently published by Other Press, at his West Village townhouse, which quickly filled with industry colleagues eager to recall the time they spent with her before her death in late 2006. Her partner, Learning Express editorial director Karen Wolny, introduced the small crowd to the book, a fictional portrait of 19th-century novelist Constance Fenimore Woolson, after which HarperCollins speaker’s bureau director Jamie Brickhouse shared one of his favorite passages.
