Warner Brothers has hired Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn as the screenwriter to adapt A Discovery of Witches for the big screen.
Author Deborah Harkness planned for her debut novel to be the first of The All Souls Trilogy, so it could be a film series someday. According to Variety, Auburn has written 9 plays and his 2000 play “Proof” won the 2001 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
Here’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: “the book centered on a scholarly woman who is a direct descendant of the first woman executed at the Salem Witch Trials that accidentally discovers a long-lost manuscript that may contain the secret of immortality. She is thrust into a position where she and a 1,500 year old vampire must stop an inter-species war between witches and vampires.”
Harkness will release book two in the series, Shadow of Night, on July 10th. Prior to its release, she will tour the Midwest and the South in support of A Discovery of Witches in paperback. Harkness, a history professor, has written two nonfiction titles in the past: John Dee’s Conversations with Angels: Cabala, Alchemy, and the End of Nature (1999) and The Jewel House: Elizabethan London and the Scientific Revolution (2007).
