Many of those within the literary community have pitched in to relief efforts helping those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Now, two major publishers have also decided to help.
Scholastic has pledged to donate one million books to schools and libraries located “in the hardest-hit areas of the tri-state region.” The children’s publishing company has also organized a website listing “Storm Recovery Resources” for families, educators and communities to access.
Simon & Schuster will aid schools, libraries, retail partners and various organizations (First Book, K.I.D.S, World Vision, UJA-Federation of New York and the Brooklyn Public Library’s Bookmobile).

“Through our Education and Library marketing department, we are offering to any public or school library damaged by Hurricane Sandy a donation of 500 ‘best of’ titles in order to help in the restoration of their collections. We have so far partnered with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project’s Literacy Lifeboats initiative to provide help to New York City schools, and the New Jersey Library Association, and have invited other state and regional associations, as well as individual libraries and schools, to participate with us in this effort.”
