Pixar Animator Austin Madison: ‘Slog Diligently Through This Quagmire of Discouragement & Despair’

By Dianna Dilworth

Pixar animator Austin Madison hand-wrote an open letter to aspiring artists back in May. The inspiring words, which have been circulating the Web in the past couple of days, can also apply to aspiring authors.

In the note (pictured left), Madison admits that he is struck by “white-hot” creativity about 3% of the time and frustration and struggling, the other 97% of the time. He writes: “The important thing is to slog diligently through this quagmire of discouragement and despair.”

His advice was very, very simple: “In a word: PERSIST.”
