Echo Novel (GalleyCat)The New-York Historical Society has named Pam Muñoz Ryan the winner of the 2016 Children’s History Book Prize. For her win, she will receive $10,000 in prize money.

Scholastic published Ryan’s middle grade novel back in February 2015. Earlier this year, it won a Newbery Honor.

Jennifer Schantz, the COO of the organization, gave this statement in the press release: “The theme of standing up to prejudice and injustice and how these struggles are intertwined in the lives of these children from different geographic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds resonated with our educator, historian, and student jurors. The jury also felt this page-turner of a novel provided a great entry point for teachers and children to discuss intolerance that continues to exist today.”
