NYC Vs. Vermont Publishing

chelseagreen.jpgIn a Huffington Post essay, Chelsea Green Publishing staffer Makenna Goodman explains, in no uncertain terms, why she left New York City publishing–a disillusionment familiar to some of our readers.

Here’s a choice passage: “I came to Vermont to work in a diner for tips, and raise some pigs. I came here, most importantly, with one certainty: That I would never, ever step foot near a publishing house or talent agency again. Not if someone paid me. Not even, perhaps, if I were entering it as a writer seeking publication. ‘Publishing sucks,’ I told everyone. “‘And I saw it from the top.'”

As the essay continues, Goodman explains how she starting working at the Vermont-based publisher, Chelsea Green–discovering what may be a more sustainable model for publishing. It’s a great question for GalleyCat readers–does the future of publishing begin outside of New York City? (Via Publishers Weekly)
