Not Your Father’s Literary Reading

By Jason Boog

LiteraryMayhem.jpgLast week, GalleyCat pondered how to improve literary readings. This week, a few writers will actually do something about it.

On Thursday, October 16, author Mike Edison (who has worked at both Hustler and High Times) will lead a crack team of writers and musicians into the 350-seat Spiegeltent in New York, shaking up the old-fashioned reading with music and stagecraft. “The show is going to be some kinda crazy mash-up,” Edison explained. “Dirty words and nasty music … savage tales and deep blues … X-rated comedy and greasy street preaching!”

The literary line-up includes: writer Jonathan Ames, Happy Endings founder and novelist Amanda Stern, and the comic essayist Rachel Shukert. Musically, the manic front-man Jon Spencer will join forces with Edison–a rock & roll experiment entitled the Rocket Train Delta Science Arkestra. The show starts at 8 pm, and tickets cost 15 bucks.
