Media Matters Studies Book Review Conflicts of Interest at WSJ

wsj23.jpgIn a new report, the watchdog group Media Matters analyzed conflicts of interest in The Wall Street Journal‘s book reviews.

The newspaper is owned by News Corp., the corporate parent of HarperCollins Publishers and Fox News. As the newspaper opens a new book review, the report studied the newspaper’s record of disclosure when reviewing titles from HarperCollins, Fox News affiliates, or other News Corp.-related parties.

Dow Jones spokeswoman Ashley Huston said they will continue to “disclose potential conflicts.” The Media Matters report includes a quote from HarperCollins VP of corporate communications, Erin Crum: “From our perspective, it is another book review and we will reach out to them. The publicists will do the job as they ordinarily do and The Wall Street Journal will decide.”

What do you think? How should conglomerate media companies disclose book review conflicts?
