Mark Sarvas, Europe’s Hottest New Literary Find

By Neal

You’ll recall that yesterday, when I was pointing out that Critical Mass isn’t quite “the country’s premier literary blog,” I mentioned The Elegant Variation as an example of a site that’s been around a lot longer and done an arguably finer job of promoting a love of reading. As it happens, the creator of that blog, Mark Sarvas (who I count as a friend, in no small part because our blogs enabled us to bond over literature) is also a novelist, whose first book, Harry, Revised, is coming from Bloomsbury next spring. And now, Sarvas reports, Canongate has snapped up world rights, for what publisher Jamie Byng seems to regard as “the hottest debut novel on the planet.” Four European markets have already made their interest known, and an Australian edition is already set for next year. “[Byng] has tucked Harry under his arm and is running hard, head down, to the end zone,” Sarvas says of the multinational frenzy. “For the last week, I’ve basically been going along for the ride, sitting in the eye of a hurricane.”
