Literature, Poetry, History & Biography Book Production Declined in 2010

By Jason Boog

In its annual book production report, Bowker noted a 51 percent increase in computer book production in 2010, a 37 percent increase in science titles, and a 35 percent increase in technology books.

At the same time, the report noted distressing decreases in other fields: “Categories subject to discretionary spending were the top losers, perhaps still feeling the effects of a sluggish economy.  Literature (-29%), Poetry (-15%), History (-12), and Biography (-12%) all recorded double digit declines. Fiction, which is still the largest category (nearly 15% of the total) dropped 3% from 2009, continuing a decline from peak output in 2007. Religion (-4%) fell to 4th place behind Science among the largest categories.”

Below, we’ve listed the top publishers by title output– a list dominated by print-on-demand publishers. BiblioBazaar leads the pack, counting 1,461,918 ISBNs in 2010.
