An adaptation of On the Road will finally begin production this August, with Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund as Marylou and Dean Moriarty, and Sam Riley in the Jack Kerouac role as Sal Paradise.
The movie, expected to be released in 2011, will be directed by Walter Salles and written by Jose Rivera, the duo behind The Motorcycle Diaries.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that “Salles traveled across the U.S. in Kerouac’s footsteps to work out the adaptation, filming a documentary on the search for On the Road as part of his preparation.” The movie is expected to cost $25 million to make.
