Jack Chick, Inventor of Chick Tracts, Has Died

By Dianna Dilworth

Jack Chick, the 92 year old inventor of the controversial Christian comic book series, has died.

The epic series of evangelical mini comics, which has generated a cult-like fascination, featured campy artwork and stories warning readers that they would go to hell for being gay, playing Dungeons & Dragons or practicing so-called “false religions.”

These zine-like books are often handed out at bus stops and even in Halloween trick-or-treating bags.  The Onion has more:

Born and raised in California, Chick was a World War II veteran and aspiring actor when he reportedly underwent a religious conversion while listening to an episode of The Old Fashioned Revival Hour, a radio show hosted by the Baptist evangelist Charles E. Fuller. He began drawing comics in the 1950s, beginning with a single-panel comic called Times Have Changed?, which was syndicated in the Los Angeles area.
