J.D. Salinger’s lawyer is looking into the unauthorized sequel to “The Catcher in the Rye.” Bookseller reports that Salinger’s agent has contacted an attorney over “60 Years Later Coming Through the Rye,” a sequel that generated hundreds of Twitter posts last week.
The article interviewed the book’s publisher, Carl-Johan Gadd, who said: “We made sure from the beginning that the author didn’t use the name of Holden Caulfield or anything else that might be trademarked so we are very confident about the future of 60 Years Later.”
Last week GalleyCat wondered if this book could be a parody (and therefore protected by fair-use laws in the U.S.), and Gadd’s bibliography points in this direction as well. Amazon lists a few books he co-wrote: “The Macho Man’s Drinkbook: Because Nude Girls And Alcohol Go Great Together” and “The Macho Man’s (Bad) Joke Book.”
