How Can Book Clubs Promote Literacy?

By Neal

When I was down in Texas a few weeks ago for the Pulpwood Queens Girlfriend Weekend, one of the authors I ended up hanging out with outside the scheduled events was Cindy Dyson (And She Was). It turns out that Cindy’s part of a book club in Montana that became interested in helping the high school students at a reservation where one of the other members teaches, and they’ve been organizing book donation drives for the last few years. Now they want to spread the model around, so they’ve created Book Club Works, a website designed to help other book clubs organize donation drives for inner city students, public libraries hit by natural disasters, prison educators, and others who need help putting books into the hands of those unable to afford reading material.
