Henrietta Lacks-Inspired Rap Video Features a Rebecca Skloot Cameo

By Maryann Yin

Rebecca Skloot made a cameo appearance in “The Immortal Rap of Henrietta Lacks” video. The piece embedded above was created by a group of Kipp Bridge middle school students.

Skloot, the author of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, endorsed this project with a Facebook post and a Twitter message. Crown first released her popular nonfiction book back in 2010.

Here’s more from the Penguin Random House announcement: “For colleagues who have not read the book, Henrietta Lacks, dubbed ‘HeLa’ by scientists, was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance.”
