For Bookstores, April Cruel, But Not Cruelest

By Neal

Monday morning, when the AAP announced a minor drop in April book sales, I predicted that we’d be hearing about a significant drop in bookstore sales by the end of the week. I honestly thought it would take until Friday, but PW Daily delivers the bad news today: bookstore sales decreased 6 percent in April. Although that’s not as bad as the 6.8 percent they dropped in March, or the 6.5 percent loss in February’s business, it still means that bookstore trade is down 4.3 percent for the first four months of 2007, even as the entire retail segment has risen by 3.8 percent in the same time frame. And, you’ll recall, the net book sales in all venues is up 6.3 percent.
