My featured book pick of the day is Down Sand Mountain (Candlewick) by Steve Watkins. It tells the story of Dewey, a total outcast at his school who befriends an even worse reject named Darla Turkel. She sweeps him into a world a lot more serious than being a social outcast; a world of small town racism, segregation, secrets, and learning to stand up for what is right.
Author Steve Watkins also teaches at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia and is an advocate for abused and neglected children.
