Could Publishers Create a Hulu for Publishing?

By Jason Boog

Former Tribune Broadcasting president Ed Wilson spoke at the Association of American Publishers annual meeting this morning at New York City’s Yale Club. Sharing experiences in newspaper and television media, Wilson (pictured, via) had a simple message for the industry: “Take control of your own destiny.”

The former president of FOX Television Network outlined why media companies created Hulu to monetize video content: “We created a business that someone else would have created if we hadn’t.” He concluded: “Could you create Hulu for publishing? Could you bring together the group of people in this room to do that?”

Do you think publishers could unite to form a similar content partnership? Wilson advised publishing executives to consult with Hulu CEO Jason Kilar to generate ideas–Kilar once served as vice president of Amazon’s North American media businesses.
