Personally, I always saw Bob Hoskins as Pops, but John Goodman looks fine in the part. And it marks the American film debut of Cosma Shiva Hagen, probably the only actor in the movie who’s had a song written about them!
(Speed Racer is actually based on a Japanese cartoon, of course, but that cartoon had its origins as a manga comic, and there were also American comics in the 1980s and ’90s.)
