BISG and Green Press Initiative Tackle Environmental Issues in Publishing

By Carmen

Per the Book Standard, The Book Industry Study Group and the Green Press Initiative have joined forces to study the book industry’s impact and progress with environmental initiatives. The U.S. Book Industry Climate Impacts and Environmental Benchmarking Survey will seek to get input from publishers, retailers, wholesalers, printers, manufacturers and paper mills, the organizations announced last week.

According to the two organizations, writes Kimberly Maul, the book industry consumes approximately 1.2 million tons of paper a year, but many publishers and retailers are already taking steps to help the environment. Some of the goals of the survey are to estimate the industry’s climate footprint, track the number of environmental initiatives from those in the book industry, identify reader and retail support for environmental responsibility, and discuss opportunities to reduce the industry’s impact on the climate and environment.
