Author and war correspondent Michael Herr had died at the age of 76. Herr died in a hospital in upstate New York after a long illness.
Herr is best known for his 1977 memoir Dispatches, as well as co-writing the screenplay for Full Metal Jacket.
“Dispatches is one of the seminal works of the twentieth century,” said Sonny Mehta, Knopf Chairman, in a statement. “And the most brilliant treatment of war and men I have ever read. It is a work that secured Michael’s legacy as one of our great writers of narrative nonfiction. Michael was also a friend to many at Knopf. We will all miss him.”
